Beef Curry – Kerala style

Hot and spicy beef curry is a hot favourite of Keralites. Chunk beef is diced into different sizes and used to prepare various items like Beef biriyani, beef ularthiyath, beef cutlet, beef fry, beef pickle, etc. Whatever be the name of the dish, it is a hero in Kerala food gourmet.

Ingredients:

  • Beef – 1 kg, diced into small pieces
  • Chilly powder – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste

Wash beef in enough water and squeeze the excess water and rub the pieces with chilly powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt to taste and keep aside for 30 mins

  • Ginger – 2” piece, coarsely crushed
  • Garlic – 10 flakes, coarsely crushed
  • Green Chilly – 6 pieces
  • Coconut chopped – handful

Pressure cook marinated beef with coarsely crushed ginger-garlic, green chilly crushed and coconut chopped with 1/2 cup water (8-10 whistles)

For the gravy:

  • Small onion – 250 gms, chopped
  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – enough to flavour the curry
  • Ginger – 1” piece, coarsely crushed and chopped
  • Garlic – 5 flakes, coarsely crushed and chopped
  • Green chilly – 3-4, sliced
  • Chilly powder – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Peppercorn – 1 tsp, coarsely crushed
  • Salt to taste
  • Garam Masala – 2 tsp, freshly ground (cinnamon, clove, fennel,green cardamom)

Method of Preparation:

  • Heat coconut oil in a heavy bottomed pan, fry ginger-garlic and curry leaves
  • Add small onion and sauté with a pinch of salt and turmeric until it is transparent
  • Add green chilly and sauté
  • Stir in chilly-coriander, pepper, garam masala and fry until it gives a seasoned aroma of spices
  • Add gravy from the pressure cooker and boil (if you want more gravy add boiling water)
  • When it boils, add cooked beef and mix well, cover and cook until the gravy thickens

Now beef curry is ready and can serve with steamed rice, chapatti, parantha, appam, Kappa, etc.

Note:

Try to avoid the maximum fat from the meat while cleaning or avoid the gravy once it is pressure cooked.
