‘Chattakari’ is coming again
This is the season of remake in Malayalam movie industry. Now-a-days, the trend in Malayalam industry to re-create the olden days blockbuster movies with new colour and faces for a lower budget. The fact is that most of the producers are very scared to invest on superstars. So this is the safest way to retrieve the invested money.
Now it is the turn of Chattakari, after Neelathamara and Rathinirvedam, to be remade in Malayalam after a period of long 38 years. The original Chattakari was released on 1974 starring Lakshmi and Mohan. The movie was based on a novel, with the same name, by Pamman. The screenplay for the movie was done by Thoppil Bhasi based on the novel. The director of the movie was K.S. Sethumadhavan. The movie is about the love story of an Anglo-Indian girl and a Hindu boy, who fell for each other and the girl get pregnant and gives birth to a baby. Later on, the boy’s family is accepting the girl and her baby.
The new “Chattakari” is directed by Santhosh Sethumadhavan, the son of K.S. Sethumadhavan, and produced by Suresh Kumar under the banner Revathy Kalamandhir. The lyrics is written by the famous poet Murugan Kattakada and the music is composed by M. Jayachandran. The lead roles, Julie and Sasi, are done by Shamna Kasim (Poorna) and Hemant Menon. In addition,Innocent, Kalasala Babu, Kattakad Premkumar, Suvarna, and Renuka are there in the movie. Innocent takes the role of Julie’s father and Suvarna takes the role of Julie’s mother.
The original “Chattakari” was remade in Hindi as Julie, in Telugu as Miss Julie Prema Katha in 1975. Again in 2006, “Chattakari” was remade in Kannada as Julie. Except Kannada, the other two remakes were blockbusters. The remake is expected to hit the theatres soon and lets hope that this remake will also be accepted by the people of Kerala.
