Go for a raw food diet but it is not possible now a days since most of the fruits and vegetable what we get from the green grocer is full of pesticides and fertilizers. So we have to think of the next best alternative. The solution is the consumption of steamed foods.

Steamed food is more preferable to boiled food since boiling increases the percentage of vitamin and mineral loss from the fruits and vegetables. We can steam most of the regular food varieties on the daily menu chart like fish, chicken, vegetables, banana, and regular break fast items, etc.

In Kerala cuisines, steam cooking is used extensively. Most of the breakfast items are cooked by steaming like puttu, idly, idiyappam, etc.. It is believed that steamed foods are easily digestible. Steamed food is advised to sick and old people since it doesn’t give strain to their stomach. A variety of items are made for evening snacks by steaming like steamed banana (nenthrapazham/ethapazham), ada, kumbilappam/ vazhanayappam (covered with bay leaves), vattayappam, etc.

In steam cooking, no oil or fat is not used but the food is cooked in its own juices with the help of the steam. So need of stir fry, deep fry, shallow fry is required. This method of cooking reduces the loss of nutrients but the food is cooked well as well as it is very soft since cooked food will retain its moisture.
Steaming helps to reduce the cost of cooking ingredients like oil, ghee, butter. While cooking fish, chicken, and other meat products, apply lime juice to get it cooked fast. Steaming make the diet light and healthy. It helps to manage your cholesterol. It is especially good for the diabetic people, old and sick people.
