New Terminal at the Trivandrum International Airport

by Kishore on November 11, 2010

The Trivandrum International Airport is really a shame when we compare it with other International Airports in India. The good news is the new Terminal for the Trivandrum International Airport is ready and the bad news is that the travelers will have to pay a user fee of INR 800.00 for using this airport even though the money used for building this airport (INR 300 crores) is the tax payers money.

Check out this Video to know more about the new Trivandrum International Airport

This terminal is constructed by the Airports Authority of India and is of International standards. This is just the first phase of the project.

The second phase work involves lateral expansion of the terminal building by 27 metres on the Chaka side and by 40.5 metres on the Karali side. An additional 8,000 sq.metres is being created and this will take the total floor space of the terminal to 30,000 sq.metres. Work on the approach road to the terminal building from the Chaka-Eenchakkal stretch of the NH 47 bypass, being undertaken by KITCO, was also progressing.

Hopefully we can start using the new terminal soon.

Its a fact that people of nearly 3 districts of Kerala along with some adjacent areas of Tamilnadu are using Trivandrum airport. The traffic congestion is also limited bacause of the ByPass roads. The New terminal is a need of the situation as we can feel the difference landing in Old trivandrum terminal from other Terminals around the world. The users fee can be reduced to INR 200 so that users wont feel the money going from their pockets. Next month I can experience the new terminal since I am planning my vacation on March.

Compare Trivandrum International Airport the first international airport in Kerala, with that of Nedumbassery which came up much later. The next phase of expansion will see the area at Trivandrum increase to 30,000 sq metres, while Nedumbassery already boasts 140,000 sq meters. I don’t think Nedumbassery fleeces its passengers, while Trivandrum already has the masterplan for squeezing out the money from passengers. WHAT A DIRTY SHAME AAI that you have to play second fiddle to a private sector funded project in the same sector.
Too bad we don’t have people like Yousefali in Trivandrum. He already has his hands full and it would not be good to overburden him.
Guess what people, Trivandrum is a sought after airport by charter agencies. Even if the airport took a 10 fold leap in overall area that would not be enough. My Australian friends and those from the Far East complain of the abysmal lack of facilities at Trivandrum. They will not go to Nedumbassery because it is too far out, so they prefer to travel to Colombo and then into Trivandrum. These are the guys who spend, not the hippie tourists.
Anybody listening or am I talking to the rocks???
