Presidential Election in Maldives – 2008

Election for the President of Maldives will be held before 10th October 2008. There are two political parties contesting for this election, the DRP and MDP. DRP is the DRP (Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party) which is led by the existing President of Maldives who is the longest serving ruler in Asia. He is in power since 1978. The other party is the MDP (Maldivian Democratic Party).

In a referendum last year, the Maldives voted to adopt a U.S.-style presidential system, a victory for Gayoom and a defeat for the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party which wanted a British-style parliamentary system of government.
