Rava Idly – Diabetic recipe

: 0 + 0 + 0 = 0

Rava Idly is a synonym for instant idly. Since my hubby is on a strict diet due his diabetic issues, his doctor advised him that he can consume Rava (semolina)moderately. He likes Rava idly but I am not happy about the seasoning part of the instant Rava Idly mix. So I thought of giving a trial on the regular Idly batter with Rava instead of rice. This worked out well and idlies came out well. Now it is one of our favourite breakfast items.

Rava Idly

  • Urad dhal – 1 cup (200 ml cup)
  • Rava (semolina) – 3 cups
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Ginger – 1 tsp (chopped)
  • Green chilly – 2 medium
  • Carrot – 1/2 cup, grated
  • Salt to taste

Rava Idly

Method of Preparation:

  • Wash and soak Urad dhal and fenugreek together for 4-5 hrs and grind to a smooth batter with enough water
  • Add ginger and green chilly to the batter, when the batter is half done
  • Mix it with Rava (use your hand to mix it because this will enhance the fermentation process so quick) and keep aside for 7-8 hrs
  • Add salt to taste and grated carrot and mix well
  • Grease the idly mould and pour the batter in each mould, steam cook for 5-6 mins over medium heat
  • Shift the mould from the steamer and let it cool, scoop the idly from the mould with a spoon
  • Repeat the procedure with the rest of the batter
  • Serve it with sambar or chutney of your choice

Grind ginger and green chilly with the batter enhances its taste and flavour
