World Environment Day 2012
World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year since 1973. World Environment Day (WED) is similar to Earth Day. WED is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme. This year, 2012, the host for World Environment Day is Brazil (Federative Republic of Brazil) with the theme Green Economy: Does it include you?
The purpose of the day is to create an awareness of the environment among the people and encourage them to take necessary actions to keep the fit for a good living. This year’s theme for WED consists of two parts, Green Economy and Doest it include you? The theme leaves the responsibility not only to the government’s side but tells that every one of us is responsible for the better health of our environment.
Green Economy is defined by UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) as one economy that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.
In simple words, the growth in economy is attained through the public and private investment that reduces carbon emission and pollution, improve energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
Does it include you?
It is the responsibility of every human being to keep the environment in good health for the future generation. What can we do on this behalf? Reduce the use of fuel consuming vehicles and use more of bi-cycles to reduce the carbon emission and pollution. Refrain from cutting tress and plant more tress, help to reserve the forests, reduce the use of plastic, save water and energy, etc.
