World’s first Diamond and Gold contact lenses

Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan, an optometrist from India’s Shekhar Eye Research Centre, has developed  contact lenses adorned with diamonds. These contact lenses are produced in a limited edition, only 3996 pairs. Each pair is having 18 diamonds on a gold plate contact lenses.  Each pair weighing a mere 5gm and will cost $15,000. They fit between 6mm and 9mm from the cornea.

The creator, Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan, gained inspiration from his wife’s cosmetic dentistry. She has diamonds planted on her teeth and this led him to the idea of diamond encrusted contact lenses.

According to a report, profits from the sale of the lenses will go to a fund that treats patients from Stevens Johnson Syndrome – a skin disease that affects the tear glands, and gradually leads to a loss of vision.
